These distinctive glass insets found in many New York City sidewalks are known as vault lights. First introduced in the 1840s, they were designed to channel sunlight into the basement factories beneath the streets—particularly in neighborhoods like SoHo and TriBeCa. Many of these historic features still remain, thanks to strict preservation and review processes that make their removal difficult. They’ve become such an iconic part of the cityscape, it’s hard to imagine New York without them.
