Governor’s Island in New York City’s harbor has a rich history—originally a food source for Native American communities, it later served as a hotel and racetrack, then a Coast Guard base. After the base closed, the island transformed into a recreational space for New Yorkers, accessible only by ferry. Among its grounds are several derelict structures, including this weathered lighthouse on the west side, where a rusted porthole offers a glimpse into its past.
