The TWA Flight Center at JFK airport in New York City is a dramatic example of adaptive reuse, transforming the iconic structure into something new while preserving its historic charm. Originally opened in 1962 as TWA’s terminal, it served the airline until 2001. After facing threats of demolition and a few contentious years, the headhouse—the central terminal building—was restored, and two hotel buildings were added on either side, giving the space a fresh purpose.
Two distinctive red carpeted ‘tunnels’ echoing the terminal’s glamorous mid-century roots, lead from Terminal 5 across an access road to the restored headhouse, now housing the hotel reception.
